You have seen all the diamond paintings. You tried your hand at an abstract owl design, a sparkly cat, or an old van Gogh painting. But now you want something a bit more personal. Sometimes an image lends itself quite nicely to be a Diamond-dot Painting®. But what size should you get? Will a picture of your fluffy Maltese poodle look good? Can you get away with a 20×20cm design? We will break down what we look for in a great custom picture and answer all your questions.

Look for clarity

Is the image blurry? You may be able to get away with a slight blurriness to the picture because once it is converted into a diamond dot then you most likely will not see it. But there is such a thing as TOO blurry! This may be due to the camera not being in focus or movement as the picture is taken. Sometimes this can be rectified with some magic editing, but sometimes not.

Top Left image is the ideal type of clarity we are looking for. However, the top right and bottom left can still look alright once converted. Please don’t send us bottom right-type images. Please.

Harsh shadows and over-exposure

Even if you can see the detail in the original picture, the program may not pick up the colouring. Shadows will appear darker.

This image was edited to lighten the dog’s appearance, and it still did not work.

Over-exposed pictures do not convert well into a diamond painting. Lighter areas will be brightened to the point of almost being white. Even with careful editing, it can be hard to rectify.

Due to the over-exposed areas, lighter areas may blend into each other.

Custom sizes

The most common size we get asked for is 20 × 30 (A4). The most common size we end up printing is 40 × 50. Why is this?

The first image is the original picture. The second is a 40 × 50. The last image is 20 × 30 (A4).

The decision is purely based on quality and how much detail we want you to see. As you can tell from the example, the 40 × 50 obviously has far more to offer visually than the A4 size. If you are determined to have it as an A4 size, then we would have to crop it right down to the main feature.

Most of the picture would need to be cropped away to see detail in the face for a custom that is a 20 × 30 (A4).

When you send us an image we will give you a number of sizes to choose from if possible. The recommended size we provide the client is the smallest size that does not sacrifice quality. We suggest not going smaller than what we state in the quote. But you can always go bigger. The bigger the diamond dot painting, the more detail you will see.

When you submit a picture for a quote we will create borders with sizes to give you an idea of what you will be getting.

Landscapes and scenery

We will always suggest going as big as you can with wide pictures of scenery. Objects in the picture can sometimes be too small for diamond dots to bring out clearly.

Left: 70 × 50 | Right: 50 × 40

This can be images of gardens, beaches or forests. Anything that has a lot of detail and elements in a frame.

With that being said…

You are more than welcome to submit your pictures to Diamond-dot Painting® even if you are not entirely sure if your image will work as a custom or not. Take a look at the gallery of custom paintings done by our amazing clients.
